Animal farm essay on squealer Essay
Throughout the play squealer is responsible for bringing about changes on animal farm after jones is expelled. In this essay Iââ¬â¢m going to explain why. In the extract, squealer is trying to convince the animals that the pigs are doing everything for the animals and for the farm. The pigs are taking all the privileges on the farm for themselves. Squealer threatens the animals by saying ââ¬Ëdo you know what would happen if we pigs failed in our duty? Jones would come back! Yes, jones would come back!ââ¬â¢ He uses rhetorical questions on this as he doesnââ¬â¢t want the animals to answer him because he doesnââ¬â¢t want them to think. He will do the thinking for them. The animals defineately donââ¬â¢t want mr jones back and squealer scares the animals into thinking that theyââ¬â¢re doing all they can to prevent jones coming back. He uses this to control the animals. Squealer tries the convince the animals that they are sacrificial in what they do and by eating the milk and apples they arnt a privelege but its a ââ¬Ëhardshipââ¬â¢. ââ¬ËYou do not imagine. I hope we pigs are doing the selfishness and privilege?ââ¬â¢- he tells lies and convinces the animals that this is the way it should be. Heââ¬â¢s responsible for the change on animal farm as he tells the animals what napoleon told him to and because the animals are so gullible they just believe him. He exploits the animals in jonesââ¬â¢ return. When he is first introduced he was a ââ¬Ëbrilliant talkerââ¬â¢. The animals said he could ââ¬Ëturn black into whiteââ¬â¢ meaning he makes bad things look good. His importance is clearly suggested. His introduction to the fable is longer than snowballs or napoleons. Squealer is napoleons henchman and will ensure that napoleon becomes more unapproachable and secure. His leadership presented is as ââ¬Ësacrifices ââ¬Ë, ââ¬Ëextra labourââ¬â¢ not a ââ¬Ëpleasureââ¬â¢ but a ââ¬Ëdeep and heavy reasonsibility.ââ¬â¢ After napoleons announcement, squealer made a round of the farm and set the animalââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëmind rest.ââ¬â¢ His confidence ââ¬Ëassured themââ¬â¢, persuading them to doubt their own memories asking ââ¬Ëhave you and recordâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ And ââ¬Ëis it written?ââ¬â¢ When the pigs move into the farmhouse, squealer persuades by whatà seems ââ¬Ëlogicalââ¬â¢ arguments. The pigs who were ââ¬Ëthe brainsââ¬â¢ are justified, they deserve priveleges as squealer agues. Squealers ââ¬Ëexcellent speechesââ¬â¢ are partly clichà ©s, ââ¬Ëjoy of serviceââ¬â¢ ââ¬Ëdignity of labourââ¬â¢. Here propaganda is less effective than inspiration example boxer. When challenged by boxes, squealer uses napoleon as the supreme authority. Squealers manipulation of historical evidence is crucial to his success. As usual, he has brilliant tactics- vivid account effective ââ¬Ëperformanceââ¬â¢ questions making animals doubt themselves. When boxer dies the animals are very sad and squealer uses euphemistic termonology ââ¬Ëreadjustmentââ¬â¢ rather that ââ¬Ëreductionââ¬â¢. This is a deliberate and effective distortion of the truth. The animals were glad to believe squealer as it was the easiest things to do so. Squealer is full of mock sympathy and uses it as an oppurtunity to praise napoleon and suggests his case for boxer.

Normalization: Pedagogy and James Paulik Montessori
Paulina V Edmunds James Paulik Montessori Philosophy and Pedagogy 27 January 2013 NORMALIZATION The children, who benefit enormously from the Montessori legacy, enjoy what Maria Montessori called ââ¬Å"a Cosmic Educationâ⬠. These children transform by the order, harmony and tranquility they experience every minute in this Montessori environment. They begin to transform, and this natural transformation was called by Dr. Montessori: ââ¬Å"Normalizationâ⬠, ââ¬Å"It is the mental state children reach when they approach their studies with enthusiasm, work with little direction, treat others in a respectful way, and can work quietly on their own or with others. (Montessori, 148) When Dr. Montessori began her work in San Lorenzo, Rome, she questioned herself if the accomplishments of the children were ââ¬Å"the work of angelsâ⬠; but after 40 years of hard work and observation she came to the realization that ââ¬Å"normalization is the single most important result of our workâ⬠(The Absorbent Mind, 204) She borrowed the term from the Anthropology, and it means becoming a contributing member of society and used it to distinguish the process that occurs when the development is happening in a normal way.Even young 3 year olds can experience and desire concentrated work, which leads them to contentment, restfulness and calm. They start being responsible for their environment and care for the other members in their community. This transformation appears through the repetition of this cycle: 1. Prepare to perform an activity: get holds of all the materials, movement involved and thought put into it. 2. The activity in which the child reaches total concentration. . Rest, a feeling of totality, satisfaction and being happiness. In Montessori schools, educators recognize this progression as being the normal work cycle. A perceptive educator can recognize a child who is normalized by these characteristics: love of work, concentration, self-discipline and sociability. . It is said that the adults work hard to change the childââ¬â¢s environment, but it is the child himself who uses the environment to change.Works Cited Montessori, Maria. The Secret of Childhood. Discuss the positive and negative impact of globalisation with Assignment
Discuss the positive and negative impact of globalisation with reference to two contrasting countries. (two countries are UK a - Assignment Example However, the ongoing financial crisis that resulted from the collapse of the real estate market has slowed the process of globalization, which is sometimes blamed by the critics for the surge in unemployment and inflation. Based on the reports of Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Odom and Koech (2010) highlighted that the economic recovery has been slow in developed countries including the UK, while the developing countries including India are making fast economic progress. The compiled reports of Central Intelligence Agency pointed that the UK had recorded a GDP growth rate of 1.6% in 2010, which was better than its negative growth rate of -5% in 2009 (United Kingdom, 2011). However, the Central Intelligence Agency also remarked that India had recorded a growth rate of 8.3% in 2010, which was marginally greater than its growth rate of 7.4% in 2009 (India, 2011). Since India and the UK represent the developing and the developed economies respectively, this paper compares the positive a nd the negative impacts of globalization on these two countries. 2. Discussion Globalization has definitely increased trade in India and the UK besides encouraging entrepreneurship among the youth of these two countries. Due to globalization, some economic sectors of India will have more advantage than the UK, while there will be some economic sectors where the UK will have more advantage than India. The following section contrasts the positive and the negative effects of globalization in India and the UK. 2.1. Manufacturing: Since India has lower labour costs than the UK, globalization has caused an increase in the manufacturing activity in India, while the manufacturing activity in the UK has comparatively slowed down as industries favor India as the low cost manufacturing base (Economics Help, n.d.). 2.2. Employment: When the manufacturing industries of the UK shift their bases to India or another developing country, there will be loss of employment in that particular sector of t he UK, while India will gain employment in the manufacturing sector. The unemployment rate in the UK was 7.9% in 2010, while it was 7.6% in 2009 (United Kingdom, 2011). However, the unemployment rate in India was 8.3% in 2010, while it was 7.4% in 2009 (India, 2011). The unemployment in manufacturing sector in the UK will be offset by employment generation in other sectors, such as finance and insurance, which shows that globalization causes shift in jobs from one sector to another without causing major catastrophic changes (Economics Help, n.d.). 2.3. Business Process Outsourcing (BPO): India has highly educated and talented professionals well-versed in speaking, writing, and reading English language. Due to a large pool of competent workers expert in providing IT enabled services to the business clients, several countries, such as the USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK outsource their work to India. Globalization has helped India to expand its BPO industry, while the UK has been a laggard due to the high labor and infrastructural costs. The size of the Indian BPO industry is estimated to be around $69 billion as of 2010 because the developed countries outsource their business assignments to India where the wages are nearly 80% lower than

Callable Bonds Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Callable Bonds - Term Paper Example There are different reasons as to why companies issue callable bonds, as noted by Frykman and Tolleryd, one of the reasons as to why companies issue callable bonds is because of their hedge interest rate (173). The point is that, the moment interest rates reduce, the issuing companies can then repay the bonds at lower interest rates. This paper aims at examining callable bonds. Overview As explained by Le callable bonds allows those borrowing the option of re-investing if the interest rates reduces (4). This implies that companies are able to hedge against likely reduction of interest rates in future. It is because of this aspect tha makes callable bonds to be prefered by many investors particularly before 1990s. In deed, before 1970, nearly all companies issued bonds that had were callable. But, as from 1970 to 1990, callable bonds being issued reduced to about 80%. This was attributed to developents that had taken place within the interest rate derivaive markets over that period. P resently, the number of callable bonds on the market has greatly reduced accounting for less than 30%. According to Le the reason for this reduction is the fact that, it has become easier for companies to hedge against the interest rate risks (4). Explaining callable bonds When a company issues a bond, it has to make a critical decision regarding the type of bond it will issue, if it will be a callable bond or a regular one. In defining a callable bond Brigham and Houston states that callable bond, also known as redeemable bond is a kind of bond that permits the issuing firm to retain the benefit of trading in the bond at a certain time before the maturity date (220). This implies that the issuing firm retains the right of buying back the callable bond, though it is not obligated to do that. Basically, the bonds are not in actual sense bought back by the issuing firm; rather the firm cancels them immediately. When recalling the callable bonds, the issuing firm has to pay more than t he par price. In some cases, for example in high-yield debt industry, the call premium could be considerable high. Therefore, the issuing firm has a choice, of either paying a higher premium or waiting until the bonds mature. Brigham and Houston notes that supposing the interest rates prevailing in the market go down at the time of calling back the bonds, then the issuing company will be in a position to refinance its debt cheaply (220). Accordingly, as the interest rates reduce, the value of the bonds increases, thus, it is beneficial to re-buy the bonds at their par value. When callable bonds are used, the investors are given the advantage of a higher token or value, as opposed to what they have gained with regular bonds. However, when the interest rates reduce, the issuing firms will likely recall the bonds and just invest them at interest rate is low. The moment a company has recalled the bond, the company can as well reissue the similar bonds at a much lower interest rate. This process of reissuing bonds to save money on the interest payment is referred as refunding. Brigham and Houston notes that before the bonds are recalled, the bond holders are informed by a letter, one of the agreements when investing in a callable bond (221), is that the investors agree that the bonds can be bought back and the investors should be ready to sell the bonds. However, companies recalling the bonds

Lupus Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Lupus - Research Paper Example Lupus is a complex autoimmune disorder affecting numerous bodily systems (Bernknopf, Rowley, & Bailey, 2011). The disease can manifest in clusters of symptoms that have been described as specific syndromes (Zandman-Goddard, Solomon, Rosman, Peeva, & Shoenfeld, 2012). Although there is no cure for the disease, the symptoms caused by lupus can be treated with medications (Bernkopf et al., 2011). There may be an environmentally imposed aspect of the disease in some patients that develop lupus (Zandman-Goddard et al., 2012). Knowing the cause of a disease can increase our ability to understand and therefore treat the disease. Unfortunately, this is not possible with lupus. The exact cause of lupus is unknown, and while it is posited that there may be a genetic factor involved, no specific gene related to lupus has been identified (Lupus Foundation of America, 2012). Individuals with family members who have lupus or another autoimmune disorder are more likely to develop lupus, and twin studies show increased likelihood of developing lupus in one twin when the other has it (Lupus Foundation of America, 2012). Certain ethnic backgrounds demonstrate a greater frequency of lupus, including African, Native American, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Island ethnicities (Lupus Foundation of America, 2012). Although anyone can get the disease, research shows that lupus appears in these populations more frequently than in others. The environmental aspect of lupus is related to the diseaseââ¬â¢s initial appearance, as well as the flare-ups the disease causes. For the disease to surface or flare up, there is exposure to some environmental catalyst that sets off a disease process (Lupus Foundation of America, 2012). ... It is also believed that the hormone estrogen is implicated in lupus, as the symptoms of the disease often first manifest during pregnancy or childbirth and can flare up with the menstrual cycle (Lupus Foundation of America, 2012). Despite the identification of these common factors in the backgrounds of individuals who develop lupus, science has yet to pinpoint a cause or cure for the disease. Anyone can get lupus and it does not appear to manifest more in any geographic location than another (Lupus Foundation of America, 2012). Scientists do not believe the disease is caused by anything in the diet of the sufferer, and cannot definitively state whether pollution could play a role (Lupus Foundation of America, 2012). Some studies have linked lupus with cigarette smoking, vitamin D deficiency, and vaccines, but have still been unable to attribute cause to any one of these (Zandman-Goddard et al., 2012). According to the present epidemiological data available on the disease, systemic l upus erythematosus usually appears in adult women aged twenty to forty years (Bernknopf et al., 2011). Its prevalence ranges from 14.6 to 68 cases per 100,000 population (Bernknopf et al., 2011). It appears in African American women as many as three to four times as frequently as in Caucasian women (Bernknopf et al., 2011). Only 15-20% of lupus cases are diagnosed during childhood (Livingston, Bonner, & Pope, 2011). There are a variety of symptoms that a person with lupus may describe during their first bout of lupus. Fever, fatigue, and weight loss are common complaints (Bernknopf et al., 2011). The symptoms of lupus can also appear on the skin in the form of a rash or in the mouth as an
